Abstract
Despite decades of research to improve the outcome of acute liver failure (ALF), there is still a very short time window to identify the etiology, start a specific treatment, and decide whether a liver transplant (LT) is needed in an individual patient. The etiology of ALF remains unknown in a large proportion of pediatric cases (1). ALF in children reflects a variety of causes, and the identification of etiology impacts management (2). Prompt distinction between those with known causes and the really indeterminate cases is crucial (3).
