Abstract

OBJECTIVES AND STUDY:
A proportion of children with chronic liver disease have severe portal hypertension (PH) and a preserved synthetic and biliary function. In our institution these children have been managed with Transjugular Intrahepatic Porto-systemic Shunts (TIPS). We aimed to evaluate the long-term patency of TIPS placed in paediatric patients with PH.

Abstract

A 2-yr-old child with early onset diabetes and hypothyroidism, and diagnosed as Wolcott-Rallison Syndrome, developed two episodes of acute liver failure and recovered, but he remains at high risk of developing another episode of acute liver failure. Autoimmune, metabolic or genetic disorders should be evaluated in children with recurrent acute liver failure and genetic tests needs to be considered.

Abstract
SLC51A encodes the alpha subunit of the heteromeric organic solute transporter alpha-beta (OSTα-OSTβ), an important contributor to intestinal bile acid (BA) reabsorption in the enterohepatic circulation(1,2). Here, we identified the first case of OSTα deficiency in a child with unexplained elevated liver transaminases, cholestasis and congenital diarrhea.
