Abstract

OBJECTIVE:
To evaluate whether liver stiffness measurement (LSM), determined by transient elastography (TE), correlates with presence and severity of liver disease (LD) in children and young adults with cystic fibrosis (CF).

METHODS:
Subjects underwent LSM at routine CF visits. Presence and severity of CFLD was determined by clinical parameters. Subjects were classified as no CFLD, CFLD without portal hypertension (PHTN), and CFLD with PHTN. LSM was compared to AST/platelet ratio index (APRI) as a correlate to severity of CFLD.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES:
Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is challenging to identify in children with acute liver failure and was not a requirement for enrollment into the Pediatric Acute Liver Failure Study Group (PALFSG). The outcomes of PALFSG participants presenting with and without HE are presented.

Abstract

BACKGROUND & AIMS:
The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) increases with age, but protective antibody responses decrease with time after infants are immunized against hepatitis B virus (HBV). We investigated whether immunization of infants against HBV prevents their developing HCC as adults. We also searched for strategies to maximize the cancer-preventive effects.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES:
Research is lacking into the emotional effects on families of serious chronic illness in infants. We examined the impact of the diagnosis of serious liver disease in infants upon parent psychological symptoms and family functioning. We hypothesized that parent psychological symptoms, family functioning and father engagement will predict infant emotional outcomes.

Abstract

BACKGROUND & AIMS:
Oxidative stress is proposed as a central mediator in NAFLD pathogenesis, but the specific trigger for reactive oxygen species generation has not been clearly delineated. In addition, emerging evidence shows that obesity related obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and nocturnal hypoxia are associated with NAFLD progression in adults. The aim of this study was to determine if OSA/nocturnal hypoxia-induced oxidative stress promotes the progression of pediatric NAFLD.
